It’s got to be as ‘right’ as you can make it, but that doesn’t mean spending thousands on it. You can do amazing things with cheap gear these days. You probably paid quite a bit for your musical equipment, how about spending some on the recording gear?
If a ‘traditional’ label wants to sign you, then it’s probably be re-recorded anyway.

depends on the purpose, if it’s just some flavour to get your first gig then a rough demo should suffice. if you’re looking at paid digital downloads, it better be really well put together.
