TuneCore Submits Music Discovery iPhone Application

ATTENTION iPHONE APP USERS:  Soon, in addition to reminiscing with old arcade games and showing off your fancy new tip calculator, you will also have access to the brand new TuneCore Discover Music Application!  I'm not an iPhone owner myself, however I got the chance to try the program out and it is really awesome.

In addition to genre based playlists including all TuneCore users and access to TuneCore's Billboard Top 25, the application utilizes a geo-locator that tells you the 25 best selling TuneCore songs based on your exact zip code.  You can organize by genre or enter other cities to learn about their sales data. There's also a Random playlist function.

TuneCore customers will have the option to make their music available as full streams or thirty second previews.  When a song comes on, listeners will be able to view high resolution artwork, share the music with friends via iPhone email, and have one click access to purchase the song in the iTunes store.

There is no official launch date for the application yet, but you can view the full press release here.

Alex, one of the TC tech guys, mentioned how it would be cool to utilize the Discover Music tool on a tour or road trip, seeing town by town which artists are selling the best.  I'm excited to see how the random playlists of all artists may eventually lead a TuneCore radio station.

Excited for the app?  Got suggestions for future generations?  Share your thoughts here!

I couldn’t find on the App Store?

Please put a “discover somebody new” feature in it, so that we unknowns can get some exposure too! Let’s not just have the most popular stars add to their popularity while newbies have to keep on struggling for recognition.

Zipcode search is a great idea, would love to see that feature integrated with a visual map interface.
Tangentially: Is there anything like a “smart ringtone” app for iPhone that would let a musician compose context specific rings i.e. computing incoming telephone numbers into melodies, computing time of day or GPS coordinates as ringtone modifiers?? If not I would love to help develop one. Feel free to contact me.

This will be such a cool app to help indie and up and coming bands and singers. It will help us in knowing the best markets for touring for sure. I have to agree with Jim Swan in the fact that having a discover somebody new feature would be great. You could even set it up by genre. If you were listening to Josh Groban or Michael Buble you could have a find new artists that sound like who I am listening to and they would see people like Andrew Martin or someone else. Great news and I can’t wait to get the app when it comes out.

This sounds too good to be true! I was sick of the music industry and radio stations telling me what I should hear and who should be the best artist and we know the radio stations were being paid off. This is a great honest system and I hope it continues to stay this way. Great job! Tunecore!!!!!

I agree Jim . . . I thought . . . cool! And then I realized that, being in Nashville, I’m not gonna pop up on any “best-selling” in the area lists!

¡Acabo de comprar un iPod Touch y una adición hermosa esta app va a ser con esto! Aprecie realmente todos los recursos y la ayuda Tunecore proporciona.

i love the idea, but sorting everything by how well it sells just reinforces the status quo. the whole reason most of us are on tunecore is to escape this kind of marketing and hope to make our own mark somehow. how are users supposed to find obscure acts or new sounds using this app?

  • quphonic

idea: why not be like google and add a “surprise me” button? then the user could pick a genre and get random results.

    Hi All
Just wanted to make sure you knew that we wanted all TuneCore customers to be able to be discovered and promoted via the TuneCore Discover Music iPhone App.
To that end, there are three tabs on the App that allow users to discover music – one of them is “Random”. The Random tab surfaces playlists of randomly selected music from TuneCore customers – everyone is eligible and anyone can be in the playlists
We submitted the App yesterday, now we need Apple to accept it and make it live…
    fingers crossed….
    We will keep you posted

I agree with Jim Swan. I think you should push for a Tunecore filter so that we don’t have to see the same Top 25 Beyonce whatever from town to town.
I care way more about seeing indie artists from town to town.

I think you are going to be stunned by what music surfaces – it varies a lot from zip code to zip code and I can attest first hand, it sure isn’t Beyonce.
I have been putting in lots of different zip codes and its fascinating to see what the top sellers are where… lots and lots of variation.
